The History of Uppingham Church

Uppingham Church has been at the heart of the community since Anglo-Saxon times.  Although it is not mentioned in the Doomsday Book, it was likely one of three churches linked to the royal manor of Ridlington, just north of the neighbouring village of Ayston.

Edward the Confessor granted the royal lands in Rutland to Westminster Abbey, but William the Conqueror later reclaimed them.  He allowed the Abbey monks to retain the patronage o the churches and collect tithes if they could.  It is possible that Westminster Abbey was responsible for building the first stone church in Uppingham.

Much of the present church dates from the 14th century, with its tower and outer walls constructed from local ironstone.  By the mid-19th century, the church had fallen into disrepair.  In 1860, it was rebuilt and restored in the Victorian style for £6,717
