House Groups

Many of our congregation are involved in House Groups. These each have a different feel and emphasis. If you are interested in being part of a group meeting regularly in a home for study, prayer or worship please contact one of the leaders or the Rector.

A hand scans an open BibleThe Thursday Group: meets at 2.30 at Crossways, 1 Ayston Road in the middle of town, on about half of the Thursdays in the year. Everyone is welcome, particularly newcomers to the congregation or town, and usually about a dozen people come along. After an hour or so of Bible study the group always enjoys tea and cake and good friendship and fellowship. The current study is God's Great Plan for his world and us, exploring the Big Picture, particularly through the Old Testament.

Our aim is always to relate the teaching of scripture to our lives today, and to try to hear what God is saying to each of us. We feel that we are all travelling along a road together with Jesus, like the two men on the road to Emmaus. Please speak with the leaders Peter and Jill Cannings (01572 821870) if you would like to join the group.

The Monday Group: continues to meet at 7.30pm on the 1st 3rd and 5th Mondays of the month at the home of one of the group members. Normally around 12-14 meet. All are welcome to speak, but we especially seek to listen to, and learn from, each other and the book.

In spring and summer 2017 we are reading and discussing “Re-enchanting Christianity: Faith in an Emerging Culture” by Dave Tomlinson, an Anglican clergyman. It is a stimulating book which seeks to find a realistic faith that reconciles heart and head, and offers a positive and engaging spirituality in the midst of modern life.

We discuss the text for around 90 minutes, close with a short time of prayer, then share light refreshments. The notes encourage us, beyond the meeting, to discuss and apply, together and with friends and family, the issues that arise in Christian living and thinking. While the group meetings are important, this wider discussion in our everyday lives matters just as much in developing further our spiritual life.
