Your church wedding can be as special and unique as you two are.
A church wedding is a timeless and deeply personal commitment to each other, in front of your family and friends. It’s been described as a “gift from God”.
You can focus on the profound atmosphere, the traditional vows (like to have and to hold) that have lasted for centuries, the spiritual significance of the union, and the joyous, intimate community setting.
Alternatively, you can make it your own with a modern language service, words and poetry read by your family and friends and your choice of music and, if you want them, hymns.
There can be a choir and bells too if you want.

Marriage is a joyful and solemn commitment, our beautiful church offers a fitting and sacred setting in which to make such a commitment before God.
To be married in Uppingham Parish Church, you will need to either live in the parish or fulfill one of the qualifying connections.
The connections are that one of you:
- has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
- was baptised in the parish or
- was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
- has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:
- has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
- has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents or grandparents:
- was married in the parish
Wedding blessings
Many couples who have had a civil wedding decide they would like to dedicate their marriage in church afterwards. A husband and wife can have their marriage blessed in church regradless of whether they were married in the UK or abroad.
The Church of England service is called a Service of Prayer and Dedication, which is often known as ‘a blessing’. It is a simple service acknowledging the commitment already made between husband and wife during your civil ceremony.
It can be designed to have a similar feel to a wedding with hymns, readings, flowers and even bells if you would like that, or it can be an intimate, low key service and as it is not a marriage service, banns are not required.
You may have a blessing in any church of your choice.
Many couples have opted for this service where one or both of them is remarrying after divorce. If this is your situation, please talk things through with our Rector who is able to offer guidance on remarrying in church or having a blessing.
