Your Church

The Parish of St Petr and St Paul stands as a sign of God's presence in the heart of the historic market town of Uppingham. Our beautiful church has served this community through prayer and service for centuries. It continues to be a vibrant place of worship which is open daily for those wishing to explore its history or to seek a time of quiet contemplation.

Our History

From the earliest Anglo-Saxon times the church has been at the heart of the Community, situated on the Market Place.

A church in Uppinghm is not detailed in the Doomsday Book, but it is likley to have been one of three churche attached to the royal manor of Ridlington, just to the north of the neighbouring village of Ayston.

Edward the Confessor gave the Royal lands in Rutland to Westminster Abbey. But they were taken by William the Conquerer, who only allowed the Abbey monks the patronage of the churches and the tithes in the county, if they could collect them. So, perhaps it was Wesminster Abbey which built the first stomne church in Uppingham.

Much of the church dates from the 14th century. The tower and outer walls are dressed in local ironstone. By the mid 19th century the church was in a very sorry condition. In 1860, it was rebuilt and restored in the Victorian style at the cost of £6717.
